Learning from History

History is very much an active force. It manifests itself, for example, in the form of bitter memories. History matters, and endures, and its consequences constantly must be grasped, not ignored.

History for many especially the history of West's colonialism and imperialism in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, is something to skim through in a high school class, and then to relegate to the past as irrelevant to today's conflicts and tensions.

Recently in Malaysia, there are forces at work that seems to do what the West always wanted to do, make us forget our history. Saying that in order to proceed forward we must put behind our history. Past conflict and tensions are not important to learn from. The history behind past conflicts and tensions are irrelevant.

This is not only a irresponsible act, it is naive and dangerous. It only worsens the situation. But off course, these people wont admit it. Infact they will fuel it further. It's part of their agenda.

The fact is, one should remember history. It is knowledge of our roots. What our fore fathers has gone through. Our rights. To say it is irrelevant is to deny our roots and deny our ancestry and the wisdom that comes with it.
