Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad: A Tribute part 2

The Man. The moment. The vision.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The state of the art modern airport for Malaysia. 1st class facilities. The gateway into the country. Design to be the regional air hub for South East Asia. KLIA alone generates substantial income for the country. People traveling into the region, by using KLIA, pays airport tax. KLIA also is design to be the regional air cargo hub for the region. Handling tonnes of cargo stimulating the economy. Creates lots of jobs and business opportunities. Not to mention very hi-tech, pleasant and safe working environment.

The Express Rail Link (ERL) linking KLIA and KL Sentral. A byproduct of KLIA. A high speed train travelling at 160kmh, it can get people to and fro from KLIA to KL Sentral in 20 minutes. A second service for residents living near Bandar Tasik Selatan and Salak Tinggi is also operational. The ERL system is a future of things to come. Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) would eventually acquire the technology and upgrade it's nationwide service using this high speed train concept.

Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). The national oil and gas company. Under his leadership, Petronas grew at a substantial rate. From drilling oil on Malaysia's soil, Petronas is now operating in more than 33 countries. Generating multi-billions of ringgits for the country. Petronas carries the Malaysian Flag wherever it operates. It is a Fortune 500 company.

Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank). Another success story. The largest local bank in the country. Serving millions of Malaysians. Notice the maybank symbol? The Malayan Tiger!

Light Rail Transit (LRT). Built to reduce traffic congestion in the city. Also to ease the financial burden of city residents. Using electricity as source of power, it reduces burning of fossil fuels making a cleaner environment. When this project was completed, lots of busses was put out of service. Busses emits tremendous fossil fuels emission. City citizens are actually chocking to death. And dont forget, he insisted on the transfer of technology. Having mastered the LRT technology, this program could be expanded to other cities in the country. If things goes as planned, by year 2020, major cities in Malaysia will have it's own LRT system with a 'Made in Malaysia' stamped on each unit.

The Penang Bridge. Once called the 'White Elephant' project. A watse of public funds. When it was finish, it was the 3rd longest bridge in the world. Now, Penangites are asking for a second bridge. The objective of the bridge was to lessen travel time which before the bridge was contructed, people have to commute by ferry. Now the bridge is highly congested and a proposed second bridge are under negotiation. Imagine if the first bridge was not even contructed. Imagine the cost now.
